SPODS - Simple Paperless Office Document System

SPODS is a set of scripts linking component applications designed to make it easy to add paper documents into a web based system. Most of the component apps are being developed separately from SPODS.

Client systems can be virtually anything, anywhere with a scanner and Web access.
Automatic OCR of uploaded documents for more accurate search capabilities
Modular - it consists of various Open Source projects - it gets better as they do!

ability to add notes to documents

ability to add Blowfish pass phrase encryption to 'folder' contents
Generate a static index file so all documents can be arbitrarily burned to CDROM as a functional static web site.
Local network sharing of folders so documents can be accessed directly by word processors, with automatic indexing by the server.
A revision control system.

Competing Web-based paperless office systems ...

Here are a few. They really aren't competitors, as they all cost more than I can afford for a full featured system. However, they will give you a good idea of how useful this kind of technology can be.
